I’m a freelance writer, editor, podcast producer, and writing teacher. I write about books, culture, and science. I'm currently at work on a book, to be published by Hanover Square Press (an imprint of HarperCollins), about the ways we imagine life beyond Earth in science and science fiction. Look for that in 2021 or so.
I'm the romance book review columnist for The New York Times; the series editor for Best American Science and Nature Writing, starting with the 2019 edition; an adjunct professor in the MFA Creative Writing program at Columbia; and associate editor at Future Tense at Slate. More on those under "other projects" above.
I've taught writing (to everyone from essayists to scientists) at Columbia, Eugene Lang (The New School), Catapult, and the Sackett Street Writers' Workshop. I created, hosted, and produced The Catapult (no relation to Catapult, above, beyond great taste in names); it was a podcast of new writing (not mine) read aloud (not by me). I've hosted readings and interviewed authors at book launches and events.
Most recently, I worked as the Managing Editor of Google Play Books. I've been freelance since August 2017. I live in Brooklyn.
