I’m a freelance writer, editor, and writing teacher. I write about books, culture, and science. My book, The Possibility of Life, will be published by Hanover Square Press in the US and Duckworth Books in the UK in April of 2023.

I'm the series editor for Best American Science and Nature Writing and a lecturer at Smith College.

Previously, I was associate editor of Future Tense, a collaboration of Slate, New America, and Arizona State University. I wrote the romance book review column for The New York Times for two years; I've taught writing (to everyone from essayists to scientists) at Columbia, Eugene Lang (The New School), Catapult, and the Sackett Street Writers' Workshop. I created, hosted, and produced The Catapult (no relation to Catapult, above, beyond great taste in names); it was a podcast of new writing (not mine) read aloud (not by me). I've hosted readings and interviewed authors at book launches and events.

I've been freelance since August 2017. I live in central Connecticut.
